Monghoul against Redis Insight
Redis Insight and Monghoul for Redis, from Redis's own documentation: key editors, bulk actions, the slow log, and what each does before a write.
On this page
Redis Insight is Redis’s own client, and it is free. It has things Monghoul does not: a profiler of every command, a Pub/Sub workspace, a memory analysis of up to 10,000 keys and a Workbench for Redis Search. Monghoul is a database IDE that also opens Redis, with the key editors staging their changes and checking the key before they write.
This page compares the two from Redis’s own documentation, read on 7 November 2026. It does not compare speed or memory, because Redis Insight has not been measured on the benchmark machine the other comparisons on this site use.
Where Monghoul is ahead
Edits that check the key before they write
Monghoul stages a change to a hash, list, set, sorted set, stream or JSON document in a band, and Apply writes them in one block. Before it writes, it checks the values you saw against the key, and writes nothing if another client changed them. Redis Insight’s documentation lists CRUD for each type and does not describe a staged change or a check of this kind. Browse and edit Redis keys.
A confirm before a command that can delete data
In the console, DEL of more than one key, RENAME onto a key that exists, a trim and an EXPIRE that deletes the key at once ask first, with the reasons and the exact command. KEYS is refused, with what to use instead. A connection can be read-only, or write-protected so every write asks. The Redis console.
The rest of your stack in the same window
One window holds the Redis cache and the MongoDB, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse or SQLite database behind it, with one licence.
Where Redis Insight wins
It is free, all of it. Redis Insight has no paid tier. Monghoul’s Redis key browser, editors, console and Import keys are free, and Export keys and the Cluster Monitor need Pro.
A profiler and Pub/Sub. Redis Insight’s Profiler shows every command sent to the server in real time, and it has a workspace for Pub/Sub. Monghoul has neither.
Memory analysis. Its database analysis lists the largest keys first, from a sample of up to 10,000 keys. Monghoul shows each key’s memory and the server’s memory, and has no such report.
Redis Search and Copilot. Workbench runs Redis Search with completion, and Redis Copilot answers questions in natural language after you sign in. Monghoul’s AI access, on Pro, works through your own assistant over MCP instead.

The Redis Insight column was read from the vendor's own documentation, version 3.8.0, on 7 November 2026. It records whether a capability exists, not whether it is any good, which is not a thing a table can hold.
Which one to pick
Pick Monghoul if
- you edit values on a server other clients also write to, and want a check before each write
- Redis sits beside MongoDB, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse or SQLite in your work
Both are free to start, so run them against the same server for a week.
Pick Redis Insight if
- you want everything free
- you need a profiler, Pub/Sub or a memory report
- you use Redis Search or Redis Copilot
Questions people ask
- Is Redis Insight free?
- Yes. The product page says it is 100% free, and the repository says it is licensed under the SSPL. Read on 7 November 2026.
- Does Redis Insight work with Valkey?
- Its pages name Redis Software, Redis Cloud, Redis Community Edition, Azure Managed Redis and "other Redis-compatible products", and do not name Valkey. Hosting providers publish guides that connect it to Valkey, OVHcloud's for one. Monghoul connects to Redis and to Valkey with the same form, and Test Connection says which of the two answered.
- Does Redis Insight have a profiler and a slow log?
- Yes, both. Its Profiler shows every command sent to Redis in real time, and its Slow Log reads SLOWLOG. Monghoul has a slow log in the Cluster Monitor, on Pro, and no profiler.
- Does Monghoul open other databases?
- Yes. It connects to MongoDB, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse and SQLite too, so one window holds a Redis cache and the database behind it. Redis Insight is for Redis only.
