A MongoDB IDE that completes from the data in your collections

Monghoul is a desktop MongoDB IDE for Windows, macOS and Linux. Autocomplete suggests the field names and values in your collections, through every pipeline stage. Build an aggregation visually or as code, grade a query with Explain, and open the document an id points to.

Does it autocomplete nested fields and real values?

Typing a path such as shipping. offers only the child fields. Inside a filter, it offers the values that field holds, from a sample of your collection, and it follows the documents through $project, $group and $lookup.

Can I build an aggregation pipeline visually?

Build the pipeline stage by stage from a searchable catalog. Each stage row says what its last preview returned, so you see what $match and $group did before you add the next stage. The Builder button returns to code, formatted.

How do I find the index a slow query needs?

Explain grades the plan. A COLLSCAN is named as one, with the index that would fix it, so the next step is one action.

Can I open the document an id points to?

After a scan finds the links between collections, an id in a result opens the document it names, and from there the next one. The Database Map draws those links.

An orders table whose customerId column names customers in its header. Beside the selected cell, a peek shows the referenced customer as a tree, and its referredBy link has opened a second peek with the customer who referred them, its name field open

Which operation is slowing the server down?

On Pro, the Cluster Monitor rates cache use, connections, replica lag and the lock queue, and names the worst one in a sentence. Live lists the running operations, marks the ones that wait for a lock or scan a whole collection, and Kill ends one after a second click. Profiler sets a database’s profiling level and lists its 200 most recent profiled operations.

Can I manage users and roles?

On Pro, Manage Users opens the users and roles of a connection in one tab, ordered by database. An Atlas deployment is managed the same way, with a project API key.

Connecting to MongoDB

  • MongoDB 4.4 or newer. An older server fails with an error rather than opening.
  • A connection string or individual fields, with 8 authentication methods, no auth among them.
  • TLS, an SSH tunnel with a host key check, replica sets and read preferences.
  • Write protection for the whole connection or for chosen databases and collections.

What it does not do on MongoDB

  • MongoDB 4.4 or newer only.
  • The database and collection filters hide names in the tree, and are not a security boundary.

Shared with the other engines

MongoDB questions

Is Monghoul a MongoDB Compass alternative?

Yes. Monghoul adds autocomplete from your data, a Database Map of the links between collections and AI access with your approval. The comparison page measures both apps on one machine.

Does it read Extended JSON and keep types exact?

Yes. A 64-bit integer keeps every digit, Copy Value of an object copies Extended JSON with its types, and Decimal128 stays exact in the table, copy and export.

Can I connect to MongoDB Atlas?

Yes. Paste the `mongodb+srv://` string from Atlas. An AWS IAM string is moved into the AWS fields for you.
